Just two albums into an extremely promising career, this sublimely gifted singer-songwriter has already demonstrated a staggering lack of regard for following the rules. Regan’s calling card was the beautiful Mercury-nominated The End Of History. Rather than follow it up with more of the same pastoral loveliness, he made The Shadow of an Empire, and with it didn’t so much flaunt convention, as trample all over it to produce a collection every bit as beguiling as its predecessor, but bursting with more ideas and sounds than some acts have in a lifetime. If The End of History was the sound of the countryside and woodland lanes, The Shadow Of An Empire was the sound of towns and dimly lit streets; heartfelt and with a ragged edge. But mere metaphors barely begin to get to the giddy, restless heart of Fionn Regan’s music. We await his next broadside (the forthcoming album is due in early August) with bated breath. While Aiken have been bringing in some of the best comedians, both home grown and international, Turning Pirate has been bringing together street performers and carnival bands from all over the country and beyond and have played a large part in making the festival one of the best 'feel good' weekends Dublin has to offer. Jugglers, acrobats, jousting knights, escaped convicts, cavemen, fire breathers, stilt walkers, fallen angels, carny barkers are just some of the acts that we found to liven up the gardens every year. Last year we brought over The Carnival Collective, a 28 piece brass and drum band from Brighton, sourced from Glastonbury (see pic below).
